Alicia, in her fourth month of pregnancy, anxious about her first baby, had no family support nearby. Alicia turned to her MOMS volunteer,
Letitia, for help and support during her pregnancy.
Letitia is a volunteer with MOMS
(Maternal Outreach Management Systems). She is a friend to pregnant women and their babies through their first year of life. Letitia and other volunteers call or visit specific mothers. They answer questions about baby development, labor, health warning signs, and childhood illnesses. They show new mothers how to breast-feed, give baths, and change diapers. Primarily volunteers work with untrained moms to listen to their words and feelings, ease their anxieties, respond to their questions and encourage them to talk to their doctor.
Letitia understands "this is a journey all mothers must travel, one that's easier if you don't have to travel alone." As Pamela Pimental, RN Executive
Director of MOMS sees the values of the volunteers in the ways they grow as people; they are empowered in their own lives as they pass on experience and information." MOMS' volunteers are women
helping women, one at a time, to be better moms.
